    Hybrid Turbine Electric Vehicle

    I may soon be purchasing a surplus turbine from an auction at very low price. It is an SR-30 turbojet engine designed as an educational tool built by Turbine Technologies. The turbine runs on Jet fuel, Kerosene, Diesel,and Bio-diesel producing 40lbs of thrust at 87,000 rpm.Specifications.pdf


    This turbine can also be fitted with a power generation system producing 2.5kW at 13V 195A, a light weight portable electric power plant.Specifications.pdf


    I imagine strapping this thing to a Tesla roadster would be wicked awesome!
    Is a battery fitted turbine electric hybrid vehicle a feasible proposition?

    How is the project coming along?

    this turbine name sounds familiar, does it have any close relation to the one in Neil Diamond's Lincvolt? He has done something similar and his 6,300Lb beast gets 80MPG!

    I venture to image they went with some kind of system that will drive an AC motor, possibly 3-phase.

    I'd like to know what expense was put into it.

    To bad they don't have any auctions/sales like that in GA. Love to get my hands on of those turbines to generate electricity for home and sell the rest back to the Utility Co.

    That turbine looks awesome and I'd love to play around with one!
    That said though, strapping it to a Tesla Roadster would do virtually nothing. 2.5KW is equal to 3,3 horsepower and is not even enough power for a lawnmower, let alone a full size vehicle...

    Turbine

    if it is the model I'm thinking of, it's a 30kW unit that is connected to a +30kW generator and tied into a battery bank. The regenerative breaking helps recharge batteries during stopping and once the vehicle is moving, as you know, it doesn't require much power to move. I would imagine the batteries are more or less a energy buffer/storage.

    Some college students built a hybrid with all electric drive chain in a Ford Expedition and it goes 67MPG. Fisker built an all-terrain four-wheeler that got the same fuel economy. They called it the "Q Drive."

    Neat stuff indeed. Too bad there isn't a public lab that I can go to otherwise there would be some solder smoke in the air! Much more so that now...

    30KW is not bad... If you are serious about this, take a look at decomissioned aircraft APUs (Auxiliary Power Unit). They are the size of a small portable generator and put out 100+ KW; one of those could power a vehicle without a large battery buffer...
